Pull Ups 101: Red Bull Doesn’t Give You Wings… Pull Ups Do!

Yesterday I was reading one of my favorite blogs Run For The Pizza by Emmeline. She came up with a super duper idea to have a contest: All you have to do is to train to do as many push-ups and pull-ups as possible. Now, it really works out perfectly for me! Why? Because I literally SUCK at doing both of these exercises!!!

Oh well, at least I’m not alone…

*Okay there, Justin Bieber’s fans, calm down! This picture IS funny! Haha!*

However, in all seriousness *hmmm… not sure if I could really be serious after that picture…*, I could really benefit from this challenge, since I have to strengthen my arms and core big time to successfully complete the Spartan Trifecta this year.

I actually was really good at doing pull ups when I was 10-11 years old. I remember how impressed some older boys looked at me when I would go for a set of pull ups or ‘walk’ the entire curved monkey bars back and forth. *Ah, good old days!* Imagine my shock, when I asked my hubby to put up his chin up bar and tried to do a couple of them… It was a BIG FAIL!

*Believe me, this what your reaction would look like if you saw me doing them! I SWEAR!*

I must admit though, Justin was very supportive and even told me I was doing great… *Yup! I guess that’s what they call a great husband. LOL!*

Anyhow, back to the subject. There are many benefits of pull ups:

  • Strengthen fingers, arms, shoulders, back, and core;
  • Can be done pretty much anywhere;
  • There are many variations of pull ups; thus, the intensity of the exercise can be adjusted easily;
  • Get your heart rate up = make that fat sweat!

*LITERALLY!*

My commitments is to be able to do at least 30+ push ups and 15 pull ups in a row by summer. I think, it’s doable. What do you think? In any case, I’ll have to videotape it, so now my pride is on the line too! Haha!

I was trying to look online for some guidance on how to get this thing started and came across this great post by another blog that I love, The Art Of Manliness. Here is what Brett suggests.

“So if you’re ready to start cranking out pull-ups, here’s your routine.

If you currently can only do one pull-up, start out by doing 12 sets of 1 pull-up with a 45 second break between sets. Do the routine two times a week. Once you can do two pull-ups, begin this routine:

Week 1: 6 sets of 2 reps. 45 second break in between sets. Twice a week.

Week 2: 5 sets of 3 reps. Twice a week.

Week 3: 4 Sets of 4 reps. Twice a week.

Week 4: 3 Sets of 6 reps. Twice a week. If you’re able to do more, go ahead. Like I said, by this time I was able to increase my reps to 10.

When you get to the point that you’re able to do more than 12, it’s time to start adding weight to your pull-up routine.”

In my opinion, it sounds like a reasonable plan. Does it?

Need some motivation? According to the Guinness World Records, here are some EXTRAORDINARY achievements:

  • Most pull ups in 1 minute: 41
  • Most pull ups in 1 hour: 1,009
  • Most pull ups in 6 hours: 3,288
  • Most pull ups in 12 hours: 4,020
  • Most pull ups in 24 hours: 4,030

Anyone dares to compete with any of these? Haha! Well, let’s start from a baby pull up first!

Failure To Find A Valentine’s Gift On Time, Fighting Blood Cancer & 45-Minute HIIT & Total Body Toning Tabata Workout

Hi lovelies! I hope you all had a wonderful Valentine’s day and a fantastic weekend! Today, I decided to give you a sneak pic into my life. *I figured, you need to know that I am a normal human being who likes to have fun and what not. Haha!*

On Valentine’s Day, my husband was a total sweetheart and sent these beautiful roses to my work.

Roses

And what I loved the most is the balloon that was attached to them!

Balloon

HOW CUTE! Right?!?!

Anyhow, I was a horrible wife. And I must admit, I failed at coming up with an idea for a gift. Yup, that’s pretty bad considering that it was out first ‘married’ Valentine’s day and I DID NOT get him a gift… Okay, okay, I made these delicious mini cheesecakes at least… on Wednesday!!! Yup, total failure and there is no way around it! *But keep on reading! As you know, there’s always hope when there is desire! Haha!*

On Saturday, we went to the Light the Night fundraiser, a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society event designed to raise funds for a lifesaving blood cancer research.

My family-in-law has two very close friends whose children beat the cancer’s a$$. *If you’re interested, you can always support the cause by sponsoring one *or both* of these teams: Alyssa’s Crew or TOM THE BOMB!*

light the night

It was definitely touching to hear the survivors speak about their battle with cancer. I can’t imagine how these children have so much courage and strength to face a decease that doesn’t give a chance at life to many… It was heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time! And the food was delicious!

Osso bucco

Also, there was a silent auction. *Please bare with me here, it’s important!* I NEVER thought they were fun, but then… I SAW AN OPPORTUNITY!

You see, my hubby is a BIG soccer fan and he is Italian, and there was a sports memorabilia frame with a glove of Gianluigi Buffon, a great Italian goalkeeper.

Buffon

That’s where the evening got SUPER STRESSFUL! The room was full of roaming soccer fans, and I…. I DARED to overbid someone else. Of course, I knew that that someone else was going to come back about 5 minutes before the end of the auction, so I had to use a woman’s persuasion. Here is a quick overview of my speech: “Oh hi! Please, tell me you’re not interested in soccer, there is so much of hockey memorabilia!…Can I somehow hide this bidding sheet? Oh, no? Okay… Hey guys, can you please block this table for me?…Are you the guy who bid before me? Oh no! Please, don’t overbid me! PLEAAAAASE! I bid on this for my husband, who is a HUGEEEE fan of Buffon. Please, don’t bid! We’re newlyweds… We just got married last August… And… I… I… I didn’t get him a gift for our FIRST married Valentine’s day.. PLEASE, DO NOT BID, this is my last chance to get it right!”

And, it worked!!! IT WORKED SOMEHOW! I got my hubby a gift, a day later, but I did! *Please, DO NOT leave shopping for gifts till the very last moment. Especially, during your first year of getting married. It’s a bad BAD idea! Haha!*

And here is a picture of our fast growing beauty.

Bella 3.5 months

For today’s workout, I decided to switch it up and do this 45-minute HIIT & total body toning Tabata workout. Just because… I FEEL IN LOVE with Tabata!

Have you ever participated in a silent auction? What was your experience? Have you ever had to really beg someone to get what you want?

You probably won’t be surprised, but I was really inspired to make a cheesy *literally* dessert to sweeten up the day of love. My choice fell on the mini cheesecakes! 29 Ways To Stay Creative & 40-Minute Fat Burning Yoga Workout

The truth for us bloggers is that it is difficult to stay creative at all times; especially, for someone who is new to writing like me. Today is definitely one of those days: I find it super duper hard to find any inspiration. *Bella could be one of the reasons I can’t concentrate though! Puppies! I don’t know what I’ll do with my future babies! Haha!*

Writer's block

Source

As always, I like to be proactive and look for solutions, and therefore decided to look for some tips on how to keep creativity in tact.

29 ways to stay creative-A1_Final

Source

Some of other ways are the following:

  1. Change your surroundings: I always write my posts at home; however, I think that a change of the scenery could help my concentration. *Plus, I love Starbucks! It’s a win win situation!*
  2. Always have a notebook and pen on you *and next to your bed… SERIOUSLY!*: Sometimes I get ideas in the weirdest of places… I swear!
  3. Use Pinterest for inspiration: I’m pretty sure that you know this already *but just in case*, you can have a ‘secret’ board on Pinterest. When I see something interesting, I always pin it there. When I lack ideas, this is the first place I go to look for motivation. I call my secret board a VISION BOARD *which is kind of true*.
  4. Surround yourself with creative people: Read other blogs, magazines, books; get yourself involved in various ambassador programs; attend conferences.
  5. Travel: as much as your wallet permits you to!
  6. Take a walk or exercise: I find that running and yoga helps a lot!
  7. Start new hobbies: Why not??? Haha!

*Hold on a second, I can’t stop laughing! Ahahahaha! I am such a MEAN person!*

Today’s Workout

I miss doing yoga. Thus my choice for today is this 40-minute fat burning yoga workout.

Your turn, how do you stay creative? What do you do on the days when you have writer’s block?

Wine 101: A Girl’s Guide To Wine & Pairing Pointers For Palate Perfection + Cheaper Than Health Care Workout

To me Saint Valentine’s Day is about my hubby, love… and WINE!

I’ve learnt to appreciate wine from young age. *No, my parents DIDN’T let me drink when I was 5!*  My great-grandfather made his own wine and my dad took after him; so whenever I visit my parents, they always have a bottle of home wine at the table for us to savor.

Anyhow… back to Saint Valentines. To me, it is the day when I make a point to show my appreciation for the love of my life. I don’t really care for gifts, even though I love giving *but not shopping forthem. I am also not very keen on going out for supper that day because… well… it’s just too many cheesy people in there that day! Haha! *On a side note, there are always two camps out there: 1 – couples who are super lovey dovey, just a ted too much, for everyone to see, 2 – single waitresses who are hating on those couples for how happy they are, which I find hilarious!* Gosh, I get distracted too easily… back to the story… So I like to have a romantic dinner at home with a nice bottle of wine *There! HA! I finished my story haha!*

However, sometimes I do find it intimidating to find a good bottle of wine because there are sooo many choices out there. Plus, buying wine based only on price… well.. it’s just silly!

Here is a quick Wine 101 for you *and me*!

And here is a little help on how to pair wine and food properly.

Why You Should Include Laughter In Your Workout Routine & A Closer Look At Heart Rate And Energy Zones During A Tempo Run

Did you know that laughter is good for your health? Of course, you did! But did you know to what extent? Check this out for yourself.

How Laughter Impacts Your Health Infographic

Source

It seems so easy to include laughter in your daily life; however, according to Psychology Today, ‘The average four-year-old laughs 300 times a day, a 40-year-old, only four.’

I know that it sounds kind of silly, but how can we laugh more often? Here are some ideas:

  • Surround yourself with people with a great sense of humor
  • Follow a blog that makes you smile: I personally love *LOVE, LOVE, LOVE* my girl from Perpetual Plot Hole. She is ridiculously funny & I adooooore her sketches! You should definitely check her out ❤
  • Laugh at the small stuff *WHY NOT?!*
  • Don’t forget to laugh at yourself when something silly happens
  • Have friends over more often *Yes, indeed! There is communication BEYOND Facebook! Haha!*
  • Watch your favorite shows and comedies every now & then

laughter

You get the point! The last time I REALLY REALLY laughed *to the point of crying & unintentionally hitting my head on a desk as I was trying not to die* was when I read a review of Haribo Gummy Candy, Sugarless Gummy Bears, 5-pound bag (the very first one called: Just don’t. Unless it’s a gift for someone you hate). Just a quick heads up, don’t, I mean, DON’T, read this review if you are at work right now because you could get fired for an uncontrollable fit of laughter. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you!

Moving on to the workout planned for today. According to the 12-week plan, it’s a 2 Mile Trail Tempo Run with a total duration of 1 hour:

  • Warm up 2 miles with a heart rate in zone 2.
  • Run 2 miles with a heart rate in zone 4.
  • Cool down 2 miles with heart rate in zone 2.

Heart rate and energy zones

So when was the last time you laughed until your stomach started hurting? Feel free to share links, let’s spread the happiness and laughter on this wintry day!

xoxo
