How Running Makes Us Happy, But Happiness Makes Us Better Runners

You subscribe to a magazine. At first, you read it diligently from cover to cover, can’t wait for the next issue to come out. And then… something comes up and you promise yourself that you’ll read it on your lunch break or while taking a bath. A few months go by and you sadly look at the pile of unread magazines unsure of where even to begin. Has this ever happened to you? Well, that’s the #StoryOfMyLife…

This is exactly what happened to me during later stages of pregnancy: My beloved Runners World issues were sitting on a bookshelf collecting dust, feeling all forgotten. That is until a couple of days ago, when I decided to look through them in hopes of finding some invaluable advice for half-marathon training.

Speaking of which, this is what Week 5 of my training looks like:

Monday – 4 miles + arms
Tuesday – rest day
Wednesday – 4 miles + total body
Thursday – 30-40 minutes of cross training: arms, abs & cardio
Friday – 4 miles + HIIT & booty
Saturday – 30- 40 minutes of cross training: arms + yoga
Sunday – rest

*Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4*

As I was looking through the May 2015 issue, I came across the following article: Happy Hour, Approach a run with a positive outlook to improve your performance and your health by Diane Stopyra. It caught my attention right away because I am fascinated by how our brains/minds work. So when I read that ‘Exercise doesn’t just improve happiness, happiness can improve exercise performance,’ as Alfred Bove says, M.D., Ph.D., professor emeritus of medicine at Temple University and a 26-time marathoner, I was sold.

You see, many times we run/exercise to release the stress of a bad day, when we need a little pick-me-up. Endorphines can easily lift our mode and get rid off insecurities. But from what it looks like, ‘We tend to think of being joyful as a personality trait, but it’s actually a skill you can acquire,’ according to a sociologist Christine Carter, Ph.D.

There are quite a few benefits to be a Happy Runner:

  1. Suffers few injuries: Since ‘happiness reverses the body’s muscle-tensing stress response’, we are less prone to injuries;
  2. Performs better: When distractions created by negative emotions are removed, we are more focused on our performance.
  3. Feels less pain:  ‘Happier people have more of the neurotransmitter dopamine coursing through their brains’, which makes it easier to tolerate discomfort, according to Jim Afremow, Ph.D.;
  4. Is healthier: It’s actually very interesting because ‘Ongoing negative emotions can provoke cellular activity that leads to illness, including cancer. Feeling joy, researchers say, reverses this process.’

If you think this got my undivided attention, YOU BET!

I came across a great presentation by social psychologist Amy Cuddy at TED Talk on how your body language shapes who you are.

https://embed-ssl.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are.html

If you have time, definitely watch it. But if you don’t, what she shows in her presentation is how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success. She was curious whether ‘we can fake it till we make it’ and found some evidence that our non-verbals govern not only how others see us, but also how we see and feel about ourselves. So, for example, we smile when we feel happy, but also, when we’re forced to smile by holding a pen in our teeth like this, it makes us feel happy.

Tiny tweaks can indeed lead to big changes. According to Jim Afremow, Ph.D., ‘Our expressions aren’t just an indication of how we’re feeling; they help dictate those feelings. In other words, if you look happy, you’ll run happy.’

So what can we do to our face to feel happier?

  • Smile;
  • Relax your forehead, so your brows aren’t furrowed;
  • Lift your chin for an instant confidence boost.

I choose to be happySource

Runners World provides even more suggestions on how to set yourself up for a good run:

  1. Eat well, make sure that you are not low on nutrients that feed your brain like magnesium, omega-3, fatty acids, vitamin B12, iron, and vitamin D.
  2. Sleep at least 6-8 hours.
  3. Belly-breathe: Try doing yoga to learn how to breathe properly.
  4. Listen to music to distract yourself from pain and fatigue. *Read this post to see pros and cons of running with and without music.*
  5. Mantra Up: I actually like to ponder on a quote as I run, but mantras are great, especially when doing yoga!
  6. Be social and buddy up for your run!
  7. Buy a good time: sign up for a fun race or even treat yourself to a massage!
  8. Explore nature!

What If ‘Plan A’ Didn’t Work?!

Good morning, lovelies!

What do you do when things don’t go as planned?

Plan B

Source

Take my weekend as an example.

Planned:

Workouts – 2
Birthday party – 1
Photo shoot – 1

Actual:
Workouts – 0
Birthday party – 0
Photo shoot – 0

*** A little disclosure: I think I’m getting old, the birthday party, turns out, was always supposed to be in a week from now. MY BAD!  Haha!

my bad

Source

Of course, I  could have let this ruin my weekend. But then, why would I do this to myself?! Instead, my hubby and I had a BLAST and:

  • spent time with a friend of mine visiting from Toronto,
  • had friends over for supper *with their puppy, so Bella had a blast too!*
  • had an awesome Sunday with my family-in-law *they are a funny bunch!*

In other words, I wouldn’t change a thing!

Here are some pictures.

First tanning of the season

*We got to tan! YAY!*

Bella with Mishka

*Bella with her new friend, Mishka. They were hilarious! Look at that flip. No one got hurt. Haha!*

Unfortunately, this is not always a case. Somehow, we do let an unexpected change in plans affect our mood, like a workout that didn’t go according to our expectations. However, if you think about it, this is the worst thing we can do to ourselves. Not only that something didn’t go as we wanted, we let it affect us. But then, we don’t pay attention to little things that can actually make our days unforgettable! Don’t you find this a bit ridiculous?

don't let it get to you

A few days ago, I was reading a post of my fellow blogger, Stephanie from Crowned in Victory. She listed 16 simple *yet GENIUS* steps to happiness *please, make sure to stop by her blog and give her some loving!!!*. Here they are:

  • Get up before the rest of the world.
  • Fall asleep earlier.
  • Eliminate processed food from your diet.
  • Cook yourself a beautiful breakfast.
  • Stretch.
  • Buy a 1L water bottle.
  • Write down everything in a beautiful diary.
  • Strip your bed of sheets and empty your underwear drawer into the washing machine.
  • Organize your home.
  • Treat yourself, have a luxurious shower with your favorite music playing.
  • Go for a walk more often.
  • Be random and message your old friends with personal jokes.
  • Challenge yourself not to ridicule anyone for an entire day, then two, then a week.
  • Think long and hard about what interests you. Develop those hobbies.
  • Become a person you would ideally fall in love with.
  • Lie in the sunshine and dream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t possible. Now, act on it!

life is beautiful

Fitness & Happiness: Bringing The Kid Back Out Found Within

Good morning beauties… and beautifuls *LOL!*

As you can see, I am in a great mood, and my trip to the spa yesterday is largely responsible for that!

Spa Diva

I got a 50-minute Swedish massage and it felt great! The masseuse had strong hands *just the way I like it!* and really worked on my shoulders and legs. I was in heaven!

Plus what could be better than a date with a friend that you haven’t seen in a WHILE at the spa?! Girl’s time at its finest!

Everyone deserves a treat every now and then. Even Bella!

Bella's addiction to carrots

Guys!!! She is crazyyyyy about carrots! She’ll do anything for them!

There is something I’d like to discuss with you today. I’ve got a question: What happens to us when we grow up?

Last summer, as I was sitting outside in a square during my lunch break. I saw these two kids. They where having the time of their lives!

be a kid from within

Do you remember being a worry-free kid running and jumping around all day long, climbing trees, falling down, scraping knees and yet getting up laughing and continuing to run? Somehow throughout the years, we tend to lose this ability. Running and jumping becomes a chore or a to-do thing on our daily list. When we ‘fall’, we fall hard. When we get hurt, we tend to shut ourselves off as a defense mechanism.

How about going back to basics and being a kid within again? Not only will this bring in happiness  and enjoyment back into our lives, but also health and success.

i'm too blessed to be stressed

My workout today, as per the Spartan guide, is as follows.

Cross-train: Do this outside.

Jump rope for 10 minutes.
15 walking lunges on each leg
15 push-ups
15 stone deadlifts
Belly-crawl 10 yards
10 stone squat chest-pass (hold the at chest height, squat the stone, then chest pass it as far as possible. Pick up the stone and repeat 10 times)

Repeat the cycle twice.

Super Spartan Run: 4-mile trail tempo run

Warm up 2 miles with a heart rate in zone 2;
Run 4 miles with heart rate in zone 4;
Cool down 2 miles with heart rate in zone 2.

Arms On Fire Workout, Also Find Out Why Sex Is Good For A Healthy Heart

Would you agree with me if I told you that right before summer majority of girls start exercising more in order to have flat stomach, sexy butt, you name it? It all definitely makes sense. However, what I mostly get jealous about *in a NICE way* is nice toned arms. I find that if a girl has a definition to her arms and shoulders it is SUPER freaking sexy!!!

*DROOL!*

I found a great quick workout on Blogilates, because let’s be honest for a moment, it’s okay to be lazy from time to time! *HAHA!*

Not only this workout is fun, it gets me closer to my ultimate goal: 30+ push ups and 15 pull ups!

By the way, speaking of sexy!

sex is good for you

According to the Spartan Race blog, sex is good for your health. Apparently, getting frisky with your significant other can have the following effects on your well-being:

  • Strengthens your immune system,
  • Reduces the risk of heart attacks for men,
  • Helps with blood pressure and weight maintenance,
  • Sex is a great cure for a headache,
  • Heals up wounds,
  • Improves bone density and lowers risk of osteoporosis,
  • Helps to keep your young looks longer!

The following is just for fun and laughs! So don’t take it in a wrong way. It’s Friday after all!

Frankly, my brain is fried, so I wanted to keep today’s post short and sweet… and FUNNY! Because as you may remember, laughter is great for you!

I came across the following infographic. To be honest with you, it seems like it’s gonna be a very healthy Friday for me! Haha! Well, take a look at it for yourself.

10 strange ways to stay healthy

Source

Here is the plan:

1. Wake up & have a nice cup of coffee. Actually, I’ll make it a nice Caramel Nespresso Latte! *I know, I know, it’s sugary and stuff, but honestly, guys, I deserved it!*

2. Take a nice shower & make sure to sing extra loud to wake up my hubby! *I’m pretty sure, our beautiful Bella will join me in making noise! After all it’s our 6-monthaversary today!!!*

3. Listen to music on my way to work. *I really hope they will play Lorde’s song. I’M OBSESSED!*

4. People watching on a bus is very often better than comedy! *CHECK!*

5. I’ll make sure to drink enough water at work. *Baby, please, put 2 bottles of water in my lunch bag! Haha!*

6. Make friends? New clients ARE friends… Right?!?! Okay, I’ll just be very friendly with them. *Note to my boss: friendly & PROFESSIONAL!!!*

7. Hmmmm… Dark grape juice…I guess, I’ll just opt for a nice glass of wine after work. *Winner!*

8. I’ll floss! Pinky swear!

9. Well… I’d say it’s TMI! *You really didn’t think I would go into this, did you?! Haha!*

So as you can see, it sounds like a very promising and healthy day for me!!!

Why You Should Include Laughter In Your Workout Routine & A Closer Look At Heart Rate And Energy Zones During A Tempo Run

Did you know that laughter is good for your health? Of course, you did! But did you know to what extent? Check this out for yourself.

How Laughter Impacts Your Health Infographic

Source

It seems so easy to include laughter in your daily life; however, according to Psychology Today, ‘The average four-year-old laughs 300 times a day, a 40-year-old, only four.’

I know that it sounds kind of silly, but how can we laugh more often? Here are some ideas:

  • Surround yourself with people with a great sense of humor
  • Follow a blog that makes you smile: I personally love *LOVE, LOVE, LOVE* my girl from Perpetual Plot Hole. She is ridiculously funny & I adooooore her sketches! You should definitely check her out ❤
  • Laugh at the small stuff *WHY NOT?!*
  • Don’t forget to laugh at yourself when something silly happens
  • Have friends over more often *Yes, indeed! There is communication BEYOND Facebook! Haha!*
  • Watch your favorite shows and comedies every now & then

laughter

You get the point! The last time I REALLY REALLY laughed *to the point of crying & unintentionally hitting my head on a desk as I was trying not to die* was when I read a review of Haribo Gummy Candy, Sugarless Gummy Bears, 5-pound bag (the very first one called: Just don’t. Unless it’s a gift for someone you hate). Just a quick heads up, don’t, I mean, DON’T, read this review if you are at work right now because you could get fired for an uncontrollable fit of laughter. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you!

Moving on to the workout planned for today. According to the 12-week plan, it’s a 2 Mile Trail Tempo Run with a total duration of 1 hour:

  • Warm up 2 miles with a heart rate in zone 2.
  • Run 2 miles with a heart rate in zone 4.
  • Cool down 2 miles with heart rate in zone 2.

Heart rate and energy zones

So when was the last time you laughed until your stomach started hurting? Feel free to share links, let’s spread the happiness and laughter on this wintry day!

xoxo
